Anisha Rajaselvam Comes First in Interprovincial Dictée!

The Grade Five and Six classes participated in a French dictée program to raise money for developing francophone countries.  This year, the focus of the money being raised was for education in these countries.  One of the dictée's written was a competition at the school level.  Anisha Rajaselvam, Gr. 6, came in first for the school.  She then wrote a regional dictée (N.S., P.E.I., NL) and she came in first for that dictée as well.

This means she now moves up to the international dictée which will be held in Montreal in May.  What she has achieved is quite an honour and no easy feat.  It is the same program for which Sacred Heart student, William Ryan, came first in last year.

It is fantastic that a student from Sacred Heart has come in first for two years in a row!

Congratulations, Anisha!

Grade 9 Egg Drop Competition - National Engineering Month!

In celebration of National Engineering Month, the grade 9 students from SHHS and FASH participated in an Egg Drop Competition that was held in the FASH gym on Monday, March 30. Mr. Jobb, grade 9 science teacher from FASH, and Mrs. Bekkers, grade 9 teacher from SHHS, grouped students into teams of four. The teams were given the task of designing an apparatus around an egg such that the egg would stay intact when dropped from a 10-foot ladder.  Students were given a supply list and a limited budget of $20,000 (fake money) that they could use to purchase these supplies.

The winning team members, with the only uncracked egg, were Hannah Baillie, Molly MacInnes, Ava Bampton and Arshan Keyghobadi.  Special thanks to Mae Seto and Marcel Lefrancois, current SHSH parents and professional engineers, who volunteered to help organize and run this event for our students.

FA Students Win Excellence in Entrepreneurship Award at Competition!

The Fountain Academy MATE Underwater ROV team competed at the provincial competition today. The event was hosted by NSCC at Survival System's Training Limited wave tank facility in Dartmouth. The team was a very late entry but the boys managed to overcome this incredible challenge along with mechanical and electrical difficulties right until the last moment. Their patience, dedication, hard-work, creativity and ingenuity certainly paid off (don't have a part? 3D print it!) as they walked away with the Excellence in Entrepreneurship Award! Quoting the presenter "they could sell an ROV to anyone". This was also incredibly impressive as the ROV was not with them for the judged presentation as a motor controller had to be replaced last minute!

We hope to build on our success and challenge the returning champions, Prince Andrew, next year!

Photos by Mrs. Shoneth Leadbetter. They did wave tank and weather demos so there was fog in the air at times which didn't help with the picture quality.

FYI: Evan Jobb also coached the team and Mae Seto, Luc's mother, helped as well.

Team members include: Fan Xiule, Michael MacGregor, Max Leeb, Alex Gillis, Aristides, Andy, Antony

Congratulations to everyone!  Well done!

Vincent van Gogh's "The Starry Night"

Each year, the English Department at SHHS organizes a writing assignment for all of the junior high and senior high girls called the "Barat". Students create their compositions based on a given theme, edit and refine them, and then read their final drafts to their classes.  Certain students are selected to read their compositions at an in-school competition.

This year, the junior high students were asked to write a story in response to Vincent van Gogh's painting, "The Starry Night".  When grade 8 student, Eileen Bekkers, found out that the original painting was at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, she made it her mission to see it during her trip to New York with her family over the March break.

Eileen thought it would be nice to give a little memento of this visit to Ms. McGuire, Head of the SHHS English Department, and organizer of this annual writing and reading competition. Eileen's family would like to give a "shout out" to Ms. McGuire and the English Department for literally engaging her world!

Debating History Made Again by Rory & Mattea!

On March 15, 2015, the Sacred Heart team of Rory Flynn and Mattea Roach made history (again) becoming the first Canadian team to final at the Oxford Union in the Oxford Schools Debating tournament.  Debating against about 90 schools from England, Scotland and Wales they elbowed their way into the final round, beating 89 other teams before losing in the finals to last year’s winners from Dulwich College.

On March 22, 2015, Rory Flynn placed 1st at the Durham Schools debating competition – the largest residential schools debating competition in the world.

We are so proud at Sacred Heart of these girls!!!
